Mexican Vacation Rental -- Casita Chuparosa

Weekly Observations
Aug 7 - Aug 13, 2005

We went around to the far side of the lake this week, into Michoacan, and see that the Mistletoe we describe and illustrated last week is very common all around the lake. While it seems to prefer guamuchil trees, we did see some in other trees.

The farmers have a wide variety of crops in the fields, and are harvesting tomatoes now. Like the wild vegetation, farm crops grow rapidly in the rainy season, with the fine sunny days and rainy nights providing a perfect environment for vegetable crops. We saw plenty of workers out in the fields trying to keep down the weeds that would also thrive if given a chance.

The lake has risen slightly with the rainy season, but is still nowhere near its high point from last year. Still, that high point wasn't reached until about October, so we have a while yet. A large part of the autumnal influx came from reservoirs upstream on the Lerma, which were filled beyond capacity last year -- haven't heard yet how they are doing this year, but they probably are not so full since this rainy season got off to a slow start.
