Lake Chapala Area Flora and Fauna
This area is rich in biodiversity, with an ever changing
cast of critters and blooms and flying creatures. The weather seems
almost unchanging, except the contrast between wet and dry seasons, but
the subtle changes in temperature and moisture and hours of daylight all
dramatically affect the plants and animals who live around us.
The snowy north drives many birds down this way, not for the
warmth -- most can tolerate cold quite well -- but because their food goes
dormant for the season, so they need to go where the bugs and blooms and
seeds are available year-round.
The amazing fecundity of our lake, which produces fish and
waterbugs and aquatic plants in such abundance that it can feed the many
local fishermen and still have plenty left for the huge flocks of birds that
feed along its shores, never ceases to amaze me. On shore, life is only
limited by the seasonal lack of water, so it bursts forth in abundance
during the rainy season, but goes relatively dormant in the dry winter/spring.
Join us as we try to learn more about the plants, insects, fish,
mammals, snakes, and other creatures of nature that inhabit our area, both
wild and domestic. We will also be keeping a weekly nature journal in
which we record our observations about the seasonal changes, creatures seen
and so forth.
