Mexican Construction Project -- The Colima Project: Casita Chuparosa

español

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla 1753-1811

Hidalgo participated in the conspiracy against the Spanish government, and was named Leader of the Liberation Movement. He had, in fact, initiated that rebellion on the 16th of September, 1810, when he issued his famous grito or shout for independence. He went to war with gangs of brave, but ill-armed men wielding clubs and throwing stones. He lead them to victory at the battle of Alhóndiga de Granaditas, and several other engagements. Félix María Calleja, Spanish commander of the fort at San Luis Potosi, organized an army to fight the insurgents, and soon after Hidalgo and his army met their first defeat in which he was captured, defrocked of his position in the Catholic priesthood, and executed.
